5 BASIC FOUNDATIONS OF A GREAT DESIGN: STORY

Three blog posts are already up for our 5-part blog series on the basic foundations of a great design. We were able to highlight the importance of insights, perspectives and concepts in creating a design, specifically graphic designs for branding purposes.

The fourth basic foundation that we will be focusing on is STORY. After you have thought of the concepts that you will use for a certain brand project, you will need to create stories based on those concepts.

But why? Do you really need a story for a brand project?

STORYTELLING IS HUMAN NATURE

STORIES are innate to us humans. In fact, they are found at almost every aspect of our lives. There will always be a story in every person’s life.

Since the beginning, stories are used by humans in many ways – in communicating with others, in sharing information, in educating others, in recording history, in recalling events, in warning others etc., the list will go on and on. There is no human civilization, both past and present, which existed without using stories.

ENCOURAGING ACTIONS THROUGH STORIES

Because stories are used in communicating or in sharing information, we can consider them the vehicles of ideas. Not only that! Stories also have the ability to influence people to take on a different point of view for a certain matter. Thus, with the use of stories, brands can be set to encourage people to take action. The corresponding action depends on how they perceive the story behind the brand.

TELLING NEW STORIES

When creating a brand, designers do their best to be original and to be fresh. While this is true, designers like us also work on familiar products or ideas most of the time. Meaning, it is a huge challenge for us to reignite people’s awareness and interest on something that is already very common.

Well, this can be achieved by using design to tell new stories about something that your target audience think they already know of. This will surely get their attention and encourage them to take action. That is how powerful stories are.

It is innate for people to tell and listen to STORIES. It is human nature! That’s why stories are a basic foundation for great designs. And that’s one thing that we prioritise here at LIFE BY DESIGN STUDIO – we create brands that can tell new stories about our clients’ business.

Stay tuned for the next and final instalment to this 5-part blog series. You can subscribe to our mailing list so you’ll get instant updates on the new stories that we tell through our blog.
